Google PDF Viewer

A Simple & Effective PDF Viewer

The best format to share files with text and pictures is, without a doubt, PDF. The best thing about PDF files is that their formatting and content remains the same across different platforms and across different PDF viewers. This is a great feature as if you send the same content on a Word file or a PPT file, you will find that the formatting can change considerably when opened by someone else on a different Word or PPT viewer. This is why PDFs are considered professional documents and is the format of choice for sharing files across team members and between clients and contractors. The thing about PDFs is that they require a dedicated PDF viewer in order for their contents to be accessible. Google has made life very easy with its Drive PDF viewer that works for all PDFs on Google Drive. For people who have the feature disabled or for files where the arrangement can't work, Google offers its own Google PDF Viewer as well.

Google PDF Viewer

Google PDF Viewer is a clone of the Drive PDF Viewer but it works for all PDFs on your phone and not just PDFs present on Google Drive. The thing that you need to understand about Google PDF Viewer though is that it does not have its own launcher. This essentially means that you won't be able to find it in your list of apps on your home or app screen after downloading and installing the app. The app would remain hidden on your phone but would automatically be used to open any PDF file present on your phone's memory.

The app has a very simple outlook and it keeps everything easy for the user. Once the app opens the PDF file of your choosing, you can easily employ the basic controls to read the contents of the document in a visually pleasing manner. The zoom controls allow for zooming in and zooming out of the text and pictures in the PDF document with the pinch-to-zoom feature.

Apart from the zoom feature, you can also use the PDF viewer to select text present in the PDF document. This is normally only possible with PDF files that have been converted from Word, Excel or PowerPoint. If your PDF file is a scanned file of a physical document, you won't be able to select particular sections of the text. This is easily detectable by keeping your finger at the spot where you want the text selection to begin. If you are able to select the text after a couple of seconds, you can easily select text and perform operations of your choice. It is important to note that you must 'download' the file first, i.e. you can't open an online copy and start selecting text. The actions you can perform include 'Select All' and 'Copy'. If you can't then you need to use an OCR in order to convert the image into text before you can do any copy pasting from your PDF file.

Google PDF Viewer

The PDF viewer also has a Find feature through which you can find particular content within the file. Again, if the file is a scanned copy, Google PDF Viewer won't be able to find anything even if your searched word is within the file. If the PDF file has been created from any other document, the search would work rather smoothly.

Features:

  • Simple app layout for all PDF files
  • Easy to search for particular text within any PDF file
  • Fine pinch-to-zoom feature
  • Great text selection and text copying feature

Conclusion:

Google PDF Viewer is a great tool for anyone who regularly needs to open and read PDF files on their phones. With its simple layout and availability of all the regular features a PDF viewer must have, the app would certainly help people who do a great amount of PDF reading on their phones.
